Summary :

Animal welfare was first recognised as a discipline worthy of scientific investigation about 40 years ago. The roots of this new science were multidisciplinary and included fields such as ethology, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, pharmacology, genetics, immunology, nutrition, cognitive neuroscience and veterinary epidemiology. Early thinking on animal welfare therefore incorporated the implications of established knowledge and practical understanding in most of these fields. This provided the foundations for initial insights into the factors that promote or jeopardise the productivity, health and welfare of the wide range of animals used for human purposes.
