As stated in the introduction to these two issues of the Scientific and Technical Review (the Review) of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), vaccination is without a doubt the best means of preventing and, where possible, eliminating animal diseases. This is particularly true for viral infections, if only because we do not have large-spectrum antivirals appropriate for use in veterinary medicine. Vaccination can thus be considered an investment in animal health insurance. Nonetheless, there are many unmet needs in animal health, and infections for which there are as yet no vaccines.
